The Map Room

Dear Friend,

I have noticed something curious.

Some places continue living in our memories long after they have changed.

Libraries are like that.

When I was younger, I remember discovering a collection of wonderfully oversized books.

They were much larger than the books beside them, as though they had important stories that simply refused to fit onto ordinary pages.

Inside were maps.

Old maps.

Some were carefully drawn by hand.

Others were filled with winding rivers, distant mountains, tiny ships, and places whose names seemed to belong to another time.

I could have looked at them for hours.

There was something magical about them.

Not because I was planning a journey.

But because I found myself wondering about the people who had once unfolded those maps, tracing unfamiliar roads with curious fingers and dreaming about places they had never seen.

Years passed.

One afternoon I found myself thinking about those books again.

So I visited the library and asked if they were still there.

The librarian smiled kindly and explained that they had been on loan.

They had long since found their way back home.

For a moment I felt a little disappointed.

Then something unexpected happened.

Instead of saying goodbye to the idea, we began searching together.

One book led to another.

Then another.

Before long we had discovered shelves filled with maps I had never seen before.

Different books.

Different stories.

The same sense of wonder.

As I left the library that afternoon, I found myself smiling.

Perhaps that is one of the quiet gifts libraries offer us.

Sometimes we go looking for one particular book.

Instead, we discover something we never knew we were searching for.

I rather like that.

It makes me think curiosity is a wonderful traveling companion.

It may not always lead us where we expected to go.

But it almost always leads somewhere worth discovering.

Until next time, may your curiosity lead you somewhere unexpected.

Until we meet again...

May your tea be warm,
your books be well loved,
your mailbox hold unexpected kindness,
and may one curious little dragon remind you to notice the quiet wonders everyone else walks past.

With warm wishes,

Paisley Dragon
